Job description
Join us as a General Surgeon at the Fort Wayne VA Medical Center located in Fort Wayne, IN.
Duties include:
• Administrative duties designated by the Chief of Surgery.
• Duties involving preventative medicine, emergency preparedness, Join Commission, and other internal and external health systems requirements deemed by the Chief of Surgery.
• Supervision and training of Surgical Residents, other trainees, and physician extenders.
• Provide fair and equitable on-call services during daytime, after-hours, weekends, and holidays based on a mutually agreed upon and pre-determined schedule.
• Demonstrates courtesy, respect, and a positive attitude towards all stakeholders.
• Have the knowledge and skill to assist customers with questions or concerns.
• Understands the importance of and participates in service recovery.
• Recognizes the need and modifies care as necessitated by patient’s age and abilities.
• Ability to provide accurate and understandable instructions to patients.
• Understands the importance and is compliant with participating in-patient identification and time-out processes.
• Ability to recognize patient signs of physical distress and monitor the patient’s condition during treatment.
• Knowledge of computerized patient records system, and their application to surgical patients, including approved abbreviations and the format for completion of progress notes.
Schedule: Full-time, 7:30A-4P M-F. Call required during off-hours including overnight, weekends, and holidays. Additional availability: On-call Surgeon must always be available for phone consultations with VA residents and physicians. On-call Surgeon must be available within 15 minutes by phone an onsite within 60 minutes.
Period of Performance: Initial period March 1st 2025-Feb 28th 2026 with 4 additional 1-year renewal options.
Qualifications:
• Education. Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
• Certification. Board Certified or Board Eligible in Surgery. Active, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in any US State, Territory, and Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Active BLS and DEA required.
• Residency. Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veteran Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Experience. Must be able to demonstrate technical proficiency in skills necessary to fulfill job requirements.
• No sponsorship available.
• MTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3.j.
• Subject to background/security investigation.
• Must pass TB test.
• Complete and online onboarding process.
• Willingness to comply with Department of Veterans Affairs vaccination programs for seasonal influenza and COVID-19.
• Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
